NSTP, Forest City conduct English workshop for Johor SPM students

GELANG PATAH: Over 30 Form Four and Form Five students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tanjung Adang, Gelang Patah attended a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) English workshop conducted by the New Straits Times Press (M) Berhad today.

The one-day workshop was sponsored by Forest City, via Country Garden Pacific View Sdn Bhd, as part of its corporate social responsibility programme (CSR).

Forest City director of strategy Ng Zhu Hann said education is important for an individual to go far in life.

“Knowledge is key to progressing forward, especially by learning the English language from a young age. It is a global language that will provide an international platform for students in the future.

“Hence, by organising this workshop, it is hoped that the students are able to elevate their language skills.

“Students nowadays need to learn something that is beyond the classroom syllabus, like digital and entrepreneurship skills, which will be of great importance in the future. To learn these skills, they must have a good grasp of the English language,” he said.

During the workshop, students recapped basic grammar rules before being guided on how to tackle the writing portion of the English exam paper. There was also a session highlighting some of the common errors in writing.

“I learnt a lot of during the workshop, especially during the grammar session. I am able to improve and detect grammar mistakes in my writing.

“The facilitator was helpful and very clear in explaining the topics.

“I am unable to do well during examinations because of the grammar errors I make. The grammar slot at the beginning of the workshop was very helpful for me. I will be more careful and observe my grammar, especially in essay writing,” said Form Five student Siti Hasrina Abdul Muiz.

Another student, Nor Haiza Mohd Fairus said: “During the group activity, we were asked to describe a situation with our group members. There was good discussion between me and my friends.”

The school’s head of language department Sharifah Zulaiha Syed Zain said: “This programme helps the students to be more confident in answering English papers. It aids the students with the necessary techniques to tackle the writing section of the examination paper.

Seven schools in Gelang Patah received NSTP’s education programmes sponsored by Forest City this year. Its final SPM seminar for 2018, which will be held at the same school on Oct 12 and 13, will focus on the four core subjects – Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics and History.
