Development projects in Johor still a govt priority

JOHOR BARU: The government has given its assurance that it will help improve the current congestion at both land entry points that Malaysia shares with Singapore, including going ahead with the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said despite the change in government, many development projects in Johor, including the Johor Baru-Singapore RTS Link, would be carried out.

“RTS, which is under Khazanah Nasional Bhd, will be carried out but in a different form. This will be announced by the relevant minister in Johor soon,” he said.

Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, said this during the opening of the state party convention here yesterday.

In January, Malaysia and Singapore signed an agreement for the new 4.2km RTS Link to transport some 10,000 passengers an hour – or 72,000 passengers a day – in four coaches travelling at 70kph.

The link, with a co-located Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex, will provide seamless connectivity between Johor Baru and Singapore.

The RTS Link will run above ground in Johor and on a 25m-high bridge track across the Straits of Johor before travelling underground to the Woodlands North MRT station in Singapore.

Lim said he and state DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong had met Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to help make improvements at the entry and exit points along both the Causeway and the Second Link.
