Locally-produced electrical appliances have potential to penetrate West Asian market

PUTRAJAYA: The Gulf Conformity Marking Scheme was launched by SIRIM QAS International today, to enable locally-produced electrical appliances to tap into the West Asian market.

The certification, which is offered by the subsidiary company of SIRIM BHD (SIRIM) will help manufacturers obtain the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Standard Organisation Mark or G Mark.

The launching ceremony of the certification was officiated by Deputy International Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister, Dr Ong Kian Ming.

Ong, in his speech, said SIRIM QAS International is recognised by GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO) as a Notified Body and is authorised to provide product certification service under the Gulf conformity marking system for low voltage electrical equipment and appliances.

“Manufacturers who intend to export their electrical products to GCC countries such as United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen and Saudi Arabia are required to obtain the G Mark to ensure that the products adhere to the standards and ruling as determined by the GSO.

“An electrical product bearing G Mark indicates that it has been evaluated by a Notified Body such as SIRIM QAS International to comply with the essential safety requirements and Electromagnetic requirement stipulated in the Gulf Technical Regulation for Low Voltage Electrical Equipment and Appliances Compatibility.

“The Gulf Conformity Marking Scheme along with other testing, inspection and certification services offered by SIRIM QAS International fully supports the government’s efforts to promote Malaysia’s export to the world and in this case, enhancing market access of Malaysian electrical appliances manufacturers to GCC countries.

“Trade between Malaysia and GCC countries have increased by eight per cent to RM39.01 billion at the third quarter of 2018 as compared to last year,” he added.

Earlier, Ong awarded three outstanding organisations with the prestigious SIRIM Quality Award 2018.

The SIRIM Quality Award is a recognition to organisations that achieve quality management in various sectors that meet national and international standards.

The awards were won by Oversea Lighting & Electric (M) Sdn Bhd for the Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) category and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka for the government category.

While the third award was won by Sime Darby Plantation Berhand for the multinational and government linked company (GLC) category.
