Driver of pick-up arrested after woman seated at open-air table mowed down

SERDANG: The driver of a pick-up truck believed to be involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a patron at a hawker center at Taman Equine here has been arrested.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Ismadi Borhan said the man was arrested at about 1.43am on Monday.

“His urine tested negative for drugs but we have taken his blood sample to gauge his level of alcohol.

“He will be remanded today,” he said when contacted.

The incident, which occured at around 8.15pm on Sunday, saw the vehicle ploughed into a table at the open-air area of the hawker center along Jalan Equine 9B.

“After the initial collision, the driver just drove off and hit three other vehicles there – a Perodua Myvi, a Perodua Bezza and a Lexus,” ACP Ismadi said.

He added that a woman in her 50s died at the scene, while at least three others suffered injuries.

“The deceased and injured were taken to the Serdang Hospital.

“We already gathered CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle involved,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing a death by reckless or dangerous driving.

ACP Ismadi urged anyone with information on the incident to contact the police hotline at 03-2052 9999 or visit the nearest police station immediately.
