MMC Gamuda bags award for work on MRT line

PETALING JAYA: MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd (MGKT) has been acknowledged for its delivery of the underground package for the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) MRT line.

It was awarded the 44th International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors’ Associations (IFAWPCA) Builder’s Award under the civil engineering construction category at the IFAWPCA general assembly at KLCC recently.

MGKT director Chee Wen Loong, who received the award from immediate past president of the Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) Matthew Tee, attributed the achievement to good team work within the company.

“The submission highlighted, among others, key achievements in technical innovation and human capital development in tunnelling and precision engineering, which saw the successful completion of the SBK line ahead of time,” he said.

The SBK underground package is notable for its huge scale and use of ground-breaking innovations which are reportedly unprecedented in the tunnelling industry.

It also saw the debut of the variable density tunnel boring machine, the first of its kind in the world. This allowed it to overcome the challenges inherent in tunnelling through the karstic limestone geology of the Kuala Lumpur city centre.

The award also recognised MGKT’s nation building efforts through the establishment of programmes like the Tunnel Training Academy Young Engineer’s Programme and the Building Information Management Academy.

MGKT tunnel general manager Ng Hau Wei was also presented with the Choi Construction Fieldman Award for his contributions to the construction industry.

This year’s convention, hosted by MBAM, was titled “Strategic Alliance with Innovation & Human Capital”. It focused on balancing the need for continuous human capital development with the increasing technology drive to elevate the construction industry.
