Malaysia to press Singapore for water review

PUCHONG, Malaysia  Malaysia will negotiate with Singapore for a realistic water price based on the current economic development.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said selling water to Singapore at three sen per 1,000 gallons (3,785l) was no longer feasible.

“It is unreasonable.”

“Now we cannot buy anything with one sen or even three sen,” he said after launching the National Community Policy yesterday.”

Dr Mahathir said prices of goods increased over time.

“When I was young, we could buy a few types of spices with one sen,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah would lead the team to renegotiate the water price with Singapore.

The team includes a representative from the Johor government.
