eSIM support now available from Maxis

Maxis is now offering support for embedded SIMs (eSIM) that promises a more convenient setup, easier device swapping and improved reliability.

Smartphones that support eSIM no longer need a regular SIM card from a telco in order to get service, making it theoretically simpler to get connected while travelling, swap between different telcos using the same device, and even to transfer a line from one device to another.

As of right now, the only smartphones listed as compatible on the Maxis eSIM webpage are the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR.

In order to set up your eSIM on your iPhone, go to Settings, navigate to Mobile Data and choose Add Data Plan. Next scan the QR code from Maxis, which will be provided depending on either of the following two scenarios:

– For customers who purchase the new iPhone XS, XS Max or XR from the Maxis Online Store, an eSIM activation kit will be bundled (upon request) together with the device which will then be sent to the customer via courier service. The activation kit contains an activation card with a QR code needed for the set-up.

– For customers who already own an eSIM-enabled device, they will need to walk in to a participating store – either a Maxis Centre or a Maxis Exclusive Partner – to request for an eSIM. Do note that the usual replacement SIM charges may apply.

Maxis is the first major telco in Malaysia that is offering eSIM support, with local mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) XOX Mobile stating that they would be launching their own eSIM solution for the latest iPhone models and Google Pixel 3 on Feb 27.
