Interfaith groups break fast together

PETALING JAYA: About 60 people of different faiths got together for a breaking of fast event to promote unity, peace and harmony among Malaysians.

The event, jointly organised by the Global Unity Network (GUM) and Christians for Peace and Harmony in Malaysia (CPHM), was held for the fifth consecutive year.

CPHM chairman Lee Min Choon described the programme as a “wonderful partnership” to promote a closer bond between communities.

“The journey to true peace and harmony is never-ending. It is our aspiration, not just to live in harmony but to promote and encourage unity in our plural society. Unity is a beautiful thing,” he said.

GUM president Shah Kirit Kakulal Govindji said the theme this year was “Common Terms Between Us and You”.

“If we want to talk about the common terms between Christianity and Islam, we will find a lot of similarities.

“But I am not saying that our religion is the same. We do have doctrinal differences, but let’s focus on unity,” he said.

Shah Kirit said that Malaysians were blessed with peace and unity but the people must also make an effort to preserve harmony.

“So, this is one small step. Let us speak less and do more,” he added.
