Video recordings by public help police solve crime

GEORGE TOWN: Police relied on footage of 35 videos that went viral on social media to solve crimes in the last five months.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk Huzir Mohamed said the viral videos had circulated on social media from Jan 1 to May 31.

“We investigated all 35 and 29 of those cases were solved.

“The remaining six are still being investigated. This means 83% of those cases were solved.

Comm Huzir extended his appreciation to those who aided them with the videos.

“We are grateful to those who recorded the incidents or provided us with information leading to the arrests.

“We want to urge all those who record such incidents to share the information with our PDRM facebook page or PDRM twitter page or to our WhatsApp account ‘PDRM Viral Video’ at 019-3019930,” he said.

On a separate matter, Comm Huzir said police solved the kidnapping of a Syrian chef on June 6 within four hours.

“At around 5.30pm that day, we received a call from the chef’s brother saying the victim was kidnapped in front of a restaurant near Jalan Tanjong Tokong here.

“The brother said the kidnappers had asked for RM100,000 as ransom to be banked in within two hours.

“We found them near a fast food restaurant in Batu Ferringhi at 9pm.

“Three accused and the victim, who had his hands bound with adhesive tape, were found in a car.

“The three suspects, two Syrian men aged between 30s and 50s and a 30-year-old local women, were remanded for seven days from Friday,” he said.

Comm Huzir also urged the public to come forward if they have any information on the robbery of almost RM1mil in gold jewellery in Seberang Jaya on June 3.

“All angles of the case are being looked into, including if the victims were in cahoots with the robbers,” he added.

“Those with any information on the case can contact the investigating officer at 014-638 9195 or 04-222 1522 or visit any nearby police station,” he said.

At the same press conference, state police chief Comm Datuk T. Narenasagaran shared an update on a viral video of a fight that broke out along Chulia Street on June 6.

“The fight started after some foreigners fought over the bill and it broke out into a brawl with others joining in,: he said.

“The cases were classified under causing grievous hurt, attempted murder, murder, extortion, vehicle theft, theft, criminal intimidation and child abuse, among others
