‘It was for an emergency’

JOHOR BARU: The police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) shown going against traffic in a viral video clip was responding to an accident along the Second Link Expressway (East Bound), said state police deputy chief Comm Datuk Mohd Kama-rudin Md Din.

The incident occurred at about 2.30am on Sunday when the MPV, near Plaza Tol Perling, was informed of an accident by road users.

“The MPV was the nearest to the location and decided to turn back since the site of the accident was just 1.5km from Plaza Tol Perling.

“The action was taken as an early response to help the victims of the accident and to control traffic flow before the emergency response team arrived,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Comm Mohd Kamarudin said all safety measures had been taken to ensure that the beacon light and siren were turned on and that the MPV only used the emergency lane to get to its destination.

“The officers in the MPV also maintained traffic flow and helped the accident victim before the paramedics arrived,” he added.

A 34-second video went viral on Facebook showing the MPV driving against traffic before stopping at the site of the accident involving two motorcycles and a car.

The maker of the video was heard shouting negative comments while filming the video and blamed the police for the accident.

In the incident, Mohamad Ilman Fahmie Abdul Fatah, 15, who was riding pillion on one of the motorcycles was killed while the motorcyclist, Aiyzuddin Eskandar Ismail, 16, was seriously injured.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the other motorcycle was ridden by Muhammad Yusof Mohammad Yazid, 28.

“Both motorcycles were going against traffic from Plaza Tol Perling towards Gelang Patah before colliding head-on with a car,” he said.

ACP Dzulkhairi added that the collision resulted in Ilman being thrown off the motorcycle.

“The duo suffered critical injuries on the head and body. Aiyzuddin was rushed to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital while Ilman died on the spot.

“Muhammad Yusof was taken to a nearby clinic by passers-by and

is believed to have suffered some injuries as well,” he said, adding

that Aiyzuddin and Ilman were students.

ACP Dzulkhairi said the driver of the car was injured in the face and was sent to hospital.
