RM6.3mil smuggling bid foiled at Customs complex

JOHOR BARU: A smuggling attempt involving various currencies amounting to RM6.3mil was foiled at Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) in Iskandar Puteri.

The cash was found inside four boxes in a Honda Accord car, said state Customs director Datuk Mohammad Hamiddan Maryani, adding that there were two local men inside the vehicle.

The smuggling attempt was uncovered during an inspection by the South Zone Surveillance Department at the light vehicle plaza of KSAB at 10.20am on Tuesday.

“The enforcement team ordered the men to open the boxes, revealing cash in multiple currencies of Malaysia ringgit, Singapore dollar and US dollar.

“The total came to RM6.3mil,” he said at Menara Kastam yesterday.

The two men arrested were aged between 25 and 26.

The case is being investigated under Sections 28B(1) and 86A(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

The suspects are liable to a fine not exceeding RM3mil or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both, upon conviction.

In a different case, Hamiddan said the Customs Department had also managed to foil another money smuggling attempt involving RM207,000 at the Muar Ferry Terminal.

The operation was conducted on June 14 at 6.30pm.

A 29-year-old Indonesian man was arrested.
