BRT project set to take off

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid System (IMBRT) will go ahead as planned and would become the backbone of public transportation around here, says a state exco member.

The main consultant will be tasked with carrying out a detailed design plan for the IMBRT, said state Public Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri.

“The project, expected to begin in 2022, was approved by the state government on Oct 4, 2017.

“It also approved the creation of the IMBRT committee that will monitor and coordinate development plans and land acquisition works,” he said during his winding-up speech at the state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail here.

Mohd Solihan said the committee was jointly chaired by the State Secretary and the deputy secretary-general in the Prime Minister’s Department.

He said the IMBRT service promised a safe, reliable and cost-effective means of public transport which would benefit about 90% of residents in Iskandar Malaysia.

Besides being an effective mode of public transport, he said IMBRT would also open up more employment and business opportunities for locals.

“They can fill up 2,000 jobs in IMBRT such as bus drivers and station staff, besides the opening of shops at terminals for small and medium entrepreneurs,” he added.
