Johor govt reverts to original stand on youth age cap

JOHOR BARU: In less than 24 hours, the Johor government changed its stance again on the youth age cap.

It has now reverted to its original stand that is to cap the youth age at 40 instead of 30 earlier.

State Youth, Sports, Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali (pic) issued another statement, saying Johor would maintained its youth age limit to 40 as announced by Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal on Monday (July 8).

“After further discussion and advised from several parties, the state government will study all implications pertaining to the amendments on the Youth Societies and Youth Development 2007 (Act 668).

“The Johor government will study the Act to ensure it’s suitable to be implemented in the state once it’s gazetted in 2021,” he said on Tuesday (July 9) night.

Sheikh Umar, who is the new state DAP Youth chief, added that the preparation period was part of a reformation process.

Earlier, the Johor government changed its stand and made a “U-turn” on lowering the age cap for youth from 40 to 30.

This comes after the state government announced Monday that it would maintain the age cap at 40.

It said that it would maintain its categorisation of youth as those between 15 and 40 years old for its polices despite the Federal Government’s move to lower the age limit to 30.

Johor, at the time, joined Selangor and Sarawak in maintaining the youth age cap at 40.

Dr Sahruddin said 40 was a strategic age, as those nearing this age would have built up leadership qualities and the ability to examine current issues.

He added that Johor respected Putrajaya’s views and the amendment to the Act that Parliament passed last week to redefine youth as those below 30 but would not adopt it.
