DOSH conducts checks at Johor construction sites

JOHOR BARU: The state Occupational Safety and Heath Department (DOSH) has started a large scale operation at all construction sites statewide to ensure all rules and regulation are adhered to.

Its director Dasuki Mohd Heak said the operation, which will run until July 18, would focus on sites that require workers to work at high places and lift items.

“We expect to check at least 50 sites throughout the state,” he said in a statement.

He also said there had been seven deaths in the first six months of this year compared with 16 in the same period last year.

Dasuki said the department carried out checks at 514 sites last year.

“From that, we issued 473 notices for improvement, 437 stop work orders and 486 directive letters.

“In addition, 189 cases have been compounded while 30 cases have been charged in court with a total fine of RM209,500 for various offences and legal breach,” he said.

He advised construction industry players to be responsible and adopt a culture of prevention to ensure safety at their work sites.

“They should identify potential risks and also carry out risk analysis at their sites,” Dasuki added.
