Rafidah: Don’t let one irrelevant foreigner divide us
PETALING JAYA: Malaysians must not allow the opinion of “one irrelevant foreigner” divide the country, says Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz (pic).
Commenting on the storm created by Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik, the former international trade and industry minister said yesterday: “I urge Malaysians not to allow extraneous matters to cause friction among us. No one should try to make political capital out of such an issue.
“We must not allow irrelevant matters cloud our minds and divert our attention from the real issues at hand.”
Rafidah said Malaysians had their own issues to contend with, which had direct relevance to the future of the young generation and the country.
She cautioned that the world was heading towards a likely recession and the country must pull together to face the challenges.
“Why are Malaysians going against each other on account of some foreigner who is being sought after by his own country?
“Why are some of us still so vulnerable to have our minds being subverted in so many ways, seemingly in the name of religion?
“Surely there are laws that can be resorted to, and the country of origin should prevail.
“Malaysia too is seeking out some ‘fugitives’ to bring them to justice, ” she added.
Zakir, an Indian citizen, stirred controversy here with his open evangelism criticising non-Muslims.
This prompted Sarawak to ban him from entering while several ministers called for him to be deported.
