445,641 pupils sit for UPSR exam today

KUALA LUMPUR: THE annual Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) kicks off today with 445,641 candidates sitting the examination.

They will sit the examination today and tomorrow, and from the 10th to 12th at 8,076 centres nationwide.

A total of 434,177 candidates are from government and government-aided schools, while 11,464 are from private schools.

A total of 53,242 examination personnel have been appointed to ensure that the exam runs smoothly as scheduled.

The Malaysian Examination Syndicate advised candidates to bring their identification document (MyKad/MyKid/Candidate ID form/ID certificate) to the centre to ensure the smooth running of the examination.

In Johor Baru, the state Health department said it will be on standby for eventualities, especially in Pasir Gudang, throughout the UPSR examination.

State Health, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar said staff from two health clinics in the district — Masai and Pasir Gudang — were ready to respond to emergency situations during this period.

“Yes, we will be on standby tomorrow (today) onwards… not at the schools but at the Masai and Pasir Gudang Health Clinics, to make sure everything is okay.”

Khuzzan said this during an anti-dengue operation at Taman Damai Jaya, Skudai, yesterday.

He was asked if the state health authorities would be stationing medical teams in schools during the UPSR examination as a preventive measure should there be a recurrence of air pollution incidences.

Before this, such incidents had caused pupils to suffer from breathlessness, nausea and vomiting.

The latest incident occurred on Aug 28, and affected 33 pupils of SK Taman Pasir Putih. They were allowed to go home after being treated by the school’s health clinic.

Last week, the Pasir Gudang education office said it was allowing some 11,300 Year One to Five pupils from air pollution “hotspots” to go on recorded leave during the course of the examination.

The schools are SK Kopok, SK Tanjung Puteri Resort, SK Taman Scientex, SK Kota Masai, SK Pasir Gudang 4, SK Taman Bukit Dahlia, SK Taman Megah Ria, SK Taman Pasir Putih, SK Taman Rinting 3, SK Pasir Gudang 1, SK Pasir Gudang 3 and SK Kota Masai 3.

All the schools are located within a 5km range of the Pasir Gudang Industrial area.

Pasir Gudang district education officer Jasni Omar was quoted as saying that the leave would take effect from today until Sept 11 as a precautionary measure.

A total of 2,175 pupils from these “hotspot” schools will be sitting the UPSR, he added.
