Hit-and-run driver in marathon accident nabbed; tests positive for drugs

SHAH ALAM: A woman believed to have been behind a hit-and-run accident in which a car ploughed into participants of the KL Standard Chartered Marathon on Sunday was arrested later that same day.

Two runners were seriously injured in the accident.

The jobless 25-year-old woman, who has been remanded for four days, will be probed not only for reckless driving but also for drug offences, as illegal substances were found on her during her arrest, and a urine test turned out positive for drugs.

Selangor Traffic Enforcement and Investigations Department chief Azman Shari’at said that the suspect was picked up by a team of officers and personnel from the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters at about 11.10pm.

“The unemployed woman from Jinjang was detained at Jalan Taman Emas in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.

“The Honda City she had driven was also seized. She was brought to the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters to be investigated.

“Checks revealed that she had six pills wrapped in foil paper, believed to be Erimin-5, on her. She also tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

“She has no criminal record. (However), she has a road accident fine that has yet to be settled,” Azman said in a statement on Monday night.

He added that blood samples were taken from the suspect at the Ampang Hospital, which were sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis.

Azman said that the woman is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, as well as the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He added that the Honda City was a rental car, and that the company which had rented it to the suspect had lodged a police report.

The accident on Sunday morning saw the car crashing into safety barriers along the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) heading towards Gombak.

One marathoner was injured in the leg, while another suffered a cracked hip bone.

They are being treated at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
