Three boys drown in JB pond

JOHOR BARU: Three boys drowned while fishing and swimming in a pond near a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) substation at Taman Sri Amar, Majidee here, last night.

The dead have been identified as Muhammad Haziq Nor Kamal, 10; Muhammad Rozie Iskandar Shah Abdullah, 11; and Faris Farhan Mohd Sani, 14.

A fourth member of the group, Muhammad Faiz Haiqal Abdullah, 13, rushed to a nearby police station and reported the matter at 7.23pm, Bernama reported.

“According to Muhammad Faiz, he and his three friends were fishing in the pond at about 2pm before deciding to swim at about 7pm.

“But three of the boys suddenly encountered difficulties when they were near the centre of the pond. Muhammad Faiz, who was near the shore, threw a rope towards them, but was unable to reach them,” Johor Baru Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahurinain Jais said in a statement, last night.

He added that Fire and Rescue Department personnel recovered the bodies of the three boys between 7.47pm and 8.16pm.
