Special Cabinet committee to engage business community affected by MCO, says Miti

PETALING JAYA: A special Cabinet committee will engage the business community to address their problems due to the movement control order (MCO), says the International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti).

The committee’s main focus will be on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), it said.

This committee will be co-chaired by two Senior Ministers: International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Miti said the committee was formed in response to the many complaints from the business community after the announcement of economic stimulus packages by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“The Cabinet meeting yesterday (April 1) has agreed to establish a special Cabinet committee to develop strategic measures to safeguard Malaysia’s economy and labour market impacted by Covid-19, with the aim of striking a balance between the nation’s economic priorities and the effective enforcement of the movement control order (MCO).

“Other key focus areas of the committee include measures to sustain Malaysia’s economic engines, particularly the SMEs, during the MCO and to ensure effective mitigation efforts in addressing the displacement of the labour force among Malaysians.

“Members of the special committee will also comprise those involved in the nation’s economy and security.

“In addition, Miti will be engaging with industry players from various sectors to gather insights from people on the ground.

“This effort is key to ensure the committee will address specific issues facing the business community particularly, SMEs, manufacturers and investors, ” Miti said in a statement Thursday (April 2).

The first meeting will be held Friday (April 3) and the second on Sunday (April 5).

The committee will then report its recommendations to the Prime Minister at the Economic Action Council (EAC) meeting next Monday April 6.

Many business owners have complained about not being given enough relief in the stimulus packages announced by the government.
