19 new Covid-19 clusters detected, 7 linked to workplace

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has unearthed 19 new Covid-19 clusters today, with several linked to workplaces.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said seven of the clusters were found in workplaces in Selangor, Johor, Penang, Kedah, Pahang and Sabah.

“In total, there were 136 cases linked to new workplace clusters,” he said in a statement today.

The Bukit Minyak Lapan cluster from all three districts on the Penang mainland involves workers from a factory in Jalan Perindustrian Bukit Minyak 8, which registered 37 cases from 189 people screened.

The Balakong Jaya Tiga cluster from Hulu Langat, Selangor, emerged from targeted screening of 15 individuals from workers at Jalan Balakong Jaya, which contributed 10 cases.

Another workplace cluster, the Jalan Raja Musa cluster, reported six cases from 138 screened workers in Jalan Raja Musa.

The Jalan Maharani cluster from Muar and Tangkak in Johor was detected from a public administration centre there which contributed 33 Covid-19 cases so far from 147 people screened.

Kedah’s Dah Empat Kota cluster was detected through the screening of 45 people from Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, Pendang, and Yan, recording 10 cases so far.

“The Gudang Genting cluster from Bentong, Pahang, involved a work site in Genting Highlands reported 14 cases from 917 people screened.

“Meanwhile, the Kompleks Empat workplace cluster involves staff from a public administration centre in Kota Kinabalu, Kota Belud, Papar, Penampang, Putatan, Ranau, Sandakan, and Tuaran in Sabah, contributing 26 cases from 97 individuals people tested,” he added.

There were also five clusters from religiious gatherings in Selangor, Kelantan, Johor and Kedah.

A 50-year-old woman who tested positive for Covid-19 on May 8 was the index case of the Desa Kemunting cluster in Klang, which came from a religious gathering. The cluster has 10 cases so far.

Another senior citizen, aged 65, also contributed to the emergence of a cluster in Klang, namely the Jalan Haji Alias cluster with 13 cases from 30 individuals tested.

The Health Ministry also detected the Pekan Pasir Mas cluster from a religious gathering there which reported 51 cases from 161 screened individuals.

“The Dah Lalang cluster in Baling, Kedah, reported 13 new Covid-19 cases from 19 people screened.

“Another religious gathering-linked cluster was found at Kota Tinggi, Johor, namely the Jalan Kesyukuran cluster with 14 cases.”

New community-linked Covid-19 clusters were also detected in Johor, Sarawak, Terengganu and Perak.

Two community clusters in Sarawak – the Ulu Anap cluster in Tatau and Bintulu and the Emperam cluster in Selangau – contributed to 19 and 97 confirmed Covid-19 cases, respectively.

The Kampung Sawah cluster was found in Pontian, Johor, contributing to six Covid-19 cases so far from 60 screened individuals.

“The Pelagat Tiga cluster in Besut, Terengganu, resulted in 32 cases from 230 screened individuals.

“The Parit Lima cluster in Hilir Perak, Perak, has 10 cases so far,” he said.

The ministry also detected two education clusters in Selangor and Perak. Twelve cases were detected from 43 individuals from the Jalan Jurutera cluster in Petaling, Selangor, while 41 confirmed Covid-19 cases were detected from 547 screened individuals.
