MCMC: Stop spreading false online news that could disrupt national harmony

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has urged the public not to post statements online that could potentially cause tension among Malaysians.

Its chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak also wants users to be careful and not share fake news.

“Please remember not to share or spread information that has not been proven to be true, as well as add on to anything that has gone viral,” he said in a statement.

This statement comes in light of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple riots. On Monday, a fight broke out between two rival groups over the relocation of the temple which resulted in 18 cars and two motorcycles being burnt.

The next day a group which had congregated at the temple turned rowdy and smashed the glass panels at One City Mall located nearby.

The Selangor police said 21 people have been arrested so far and the Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor has also urged Malaysians to cease making speculations on the riots.

“We will identify and track down those who created trouble at the temple and mall. Stop issuing statements that will jeopardise public order. Instead, people should calm the situation,” he said in a report on Nov 27.

The public is also reminded to check and report on widely-shared fake news on the Sebenarnya.my portal by the MCMC.
