Vision impaired pupils happy to start school

JOHOR BARU: It has been an exciting day for four Year One pupils at SK Pendidikan Khas (SKPK) Princess Elizabeth here.

The two boys and two girls, who are suffering from severe vision impairment since birth, looked excited after the 7.30am assembly.

All of them started their first day lesson with a familiarising session before being taught to use braille by class teacher Ibrahim Jelani.

Nur Hanisah Mohd Haris, seven, who arrived at the school accompanied by her father, Mohd Haris Atan, 36, and mother, Norazurah Abu Bakar, 38, said she was excited to meet new friends.

Norazurah said her daughter had been suffering from severe vision impairment since birth due to cataract problems.

She chose SKPK Princess Elizabeth as the school had the best facilities, especially the hostel.

“Two of Nur Hanisah’s older brothers are also studying here due to the same visual problems,” she said.

Ibrahim, who has been teaching at the school for more than 30 years, said the first day’s session went on smoothly.

There are 31 teachers at the school with 51 students, of which 26 are blind while the other 25 are suffering from severe vision impairment. — Bernama
