Chromium-based Microsoft Edge now in testing phase

Microsoft has made it possible for users to test the latest versions of the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, a free web browser that serves as a basis for several other programs including Google Chrome.

Back at the end of 2018, Microsoft announced its plans to switch to Chromium as a new engine for its web browser, Edge. From this point on, it will use the same technical basis that a large number of other browsers use, including its key rival Chrome, favoured by many Internet users around the world.

As part of the “Microsoft Edge Insider” programme, it is now possible to test the very first versions of the browser completely revised and corrected (but not necessarily 100% ready) on Windows 10. Two versions (“Canary channel” and “Dev channel”) are currently available for download, while a more stable beta version will be available at a later date.

Several American sites, including The Verge, have already tested the browser. Microsoft has decided to remove or replace more than 53 services including many relating to Google and its various services, in the aim of making surfing much faster.

According to the latest StarCounter statistics, Edge now accounts for 4.5% of market share in the world (computer), lagging behind Chrome (69.5%), as well as Firefox (9.5%), Safari (6.4%) and even Internet Explorer (5.4%).
