Google Doodle celebrates Earth Day

Google is celebrating Earth Day with an interactive infographic about remarkable species of plants and animals.

“This year’s annual Earth Day Doodle takes us around the planet we call home to discover some of the awe-inspiring organisms which inhabit it,” Google wrote on their Doodle archive, adding that each species being featured is unmatched in one way or another.

The artist behind the Doodle, Kevin Laughlin, said that the hardest part in creating it was deciding on which species to include.

“The last thing I wanted to do was feature animals based on their cuteness or how they might appeal in some way to my mammalian sensibilities. We tried to focus on having a good range of organisms from around the globe that all had an extra special unique quality or earthly superlative,” he said.

He also added that he hopes the Doodle would inspire curiosity and wonder towards nature.

The Doodle infographic features animations of six unique organisms that are accompanied by fun facts about them, starting high up in the skies with the Wandering Albatross and going deep underground with the Deep Cave Springtail.

According to the map on the archive, the Doodle is available in almost every region on earth, which is quite fitting really since it’s Earth Day after all.
