Marine police successfully cracking down on smugglers

JOHOR BARU: Marine police have arrested 1,095 individuals involved in various offences, including smuggling, in the first four months of this year.

Its Bukit Aman commander Senior Asst Comm Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the arrests were made from the 1,992 cases the marine police investigated from January to April. He added that the cases involved the smuggling of cigarettes, liquor and fireworks from all over the country.

“The 1,992 cases recorded show a 26% increase compared to the same period last year, which saw 1,554 cases.

“The seized items are valued at RM72.53mil, a 117% increase over last year’s RM33.39mil,” SAC Mohd Yusoff said after the handover of five amphibian boats at the marine police region II headquarters here yesterday.

He said the success showed the aggressive approach taken by the marine police in safeguarding the nation’s borders and security.

Meanwhile, at the event, Bukit Aman Strategic Source and Technology Department deputy director Senior Asst Comm Datuk Sahabudin Abd Manan said the latest assets would help improve border patrol.

The marine police, he noted, now had six amphibian boats after receiving their first unit back in 2017.

“The amphibian boat, which is able to operate on both land and sea, has a top speed of 120kph on land and 30 knots on water,” SAC Sahabudin said.

He said the assets would be placed in Tampoi and Pengerang in Johor, Kuantan (Pahang), Pengkalan Kubor (Kelantan), Batu Uban (Penang) and Kampung Acheh (Perak).
