MOBY Dick or The Whale is an 1851 novel by American writer Herman Melville. It tells the story of Ahab, captain of the whaling ship Pequod. Ahab ruled over a group of whalers and sailors from a multitude of races and religions. Despite their diversity, the men on the ship yielded to the will of Ahab who demanded utter obedience. The pluralism evident in the ship’s crew was reduced to one organism directed to fulfil the mad goal of a mad man.
