Councillors turn to Johor MB to resolve rift with mayor

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Members of the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) have turned to the Johor Mentri Besar to resolve a rift between the councillors and mayor Datuk Adib Azhari Daud involving a Ramadan bazaar. This comes after the MBIP councillors staged a walkout during its full council meeting on May 26 in protest against alleged misuse of power by Adib.

Gelang Patah councillor Mohd Azam Mektar, who led the walkout with 17 others, accused Adib of changing a decision on a Ramadan bazaar’s location without informing them.“The mayor has yet to explain himself or justify why the decision change was made despite being given 15 days to do so,” he said after handing over a memorandum to the Johor Mentri Besar in Kota Iskandar yesterday.

Mohd Azam added that all 24 councillors had agreed to hand over the memorandum to Mentri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal as a last resort to get an answer from the mayor.

“The memorandum also urges the state government to conduct regular checks on the mayor as well as department heads of all local authorities in Johor to ensure they cooperate in allowing councillors to carry out their responsibilities,” he said.

He added that Dr Sahruddin had told the group the state government would form a committee to investigate the matter.
