Apple upgrades MacBook Air and Pro, drops Air’s price by RM550

Apple is lowering the price for its refreshed MacBook Air laptops by RM550, updating its MacBook Pro and phasing out its older MacBook 12in models.

In a press release, Mac product marketing senior director Tom Boger said this update and price drop was part of the company’s Back to School promotion for the American school year, as the lightweight laptop was its most popular product among students.

According to the Malaysian Apple online store, the basic model with a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, 128GB storage and 8GB RAM costs RM4,699, down from its original RM5,249 launch price. For students, the price is lowered further to RM4,299.

Boger announced in a press release that the MacBook Pro has been updated with the latest 8th-generation quad-core processors to make it twice as powerful as before, with additional features including Touch Bar and Touch ID, True Tone Retina display and the Apple T2 Security Chip.

TrueTone technology, previously introduced on iPhones and iPads, dynamically changed colour temperature to make the screen colours look more accurate in different environments.

Meanwhile, the MacBook 12in model, which falls somewhere between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in terms of price and specs, is being phased out.

The laptop was first introduced in 2015 and for a time served as a more expensive replacement for the MacBook Air, which was not significantly upgraded until this year. A check showed that it had already been removed from the Malaysian Apple online store.
