Choosing suitable study options
CHOOSING the most suitable study course after completing secondary education is a decision that cannot be taken lightly as it sets the tone of the career pathways school-leavers would embark on in the future.
With that in mind, it would be a wise to scout around before making a choice.
The Star Education Fair 2019, taking place next month at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, is the place to obtain information from qualified counsellors and academic staff about the different courses and subjects available.
The biggest exhibitors at the two-day event are Limkokwing University of Creative Technology and International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW), with 18 booths each.
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD) Malaysia Campus (RUMC) and Education in Ireland will be sharing a combined 18 booths.
Asia Pacific University, Brickfields Asia College, HELP University, KDU Universitiy College, Quest International University Perak and the University of Nottingham Malaysia are the second largest exhibitors, taking 16 booths each.
IUMW vice-chancellor Tay Kay Luan encouraged youngsters to come to the fair where all the information is conveniently placed under one roof.
“The education fair is relevant to students who don’t know their career interests because it is a platform where they can discover opportunities that are relevant to their strengths and interests,” he said.
The fair, he added, allows students to learn about what each educational institution has to offer.
“Educational institutions have unique strengths, such as their networks, achievements, leadership, research resources, facilities, as well as their location and accessibility,” he said.
Noting that IUMW is backed by a unique collaboration of two of the oldest but distinctive institutions in the world – Universiti Malaya and University of Wales in the United Kingdom – Tay said the strategic partnership allows the institution to build a better connected university, allowing dual awards and recognitions.
“It is from this strong foundation and experience in learning and teaching that we grow, innovate and shape relevant programmes to maximise our resources to benefit the students,” he said.
Exhibitors at the fair will brief visitors on a wide range of programmes and professional qualifications available, while education and career talks will also be held. Early bird discounts, rebates, and scholarships are available at the fair as well.
The Psychology Department at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) will be conducting a free Career – Personality Mapping Test at the fair to help students identify their ideal career options that match their personality and aspirations.
Faculty of Allied Health Sciences dean Dr Ahmad Fairuz Mohamed said the test, which is based on an industry accepted methodology, has been modified further by the psychology team to fit the needs of Form Five school leavers.
“To make the experience smooth and easy, students can access computer terminals that can analyse their responses and present their matching results.
“For those who want one-to-one coaching or guidance, there will be six professional and experienced counsellors on hand who can advise them further,” he said.
Dr Ahmad Fairuz said the free career test and counselling session was a way for faculty members to contribute to society and help students who have completed their studies at school but have no idea what career they would like to pursue. The Psychology Department is part of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at CUCMS.

The Star Education Fair 2019 will be held on Jan 5 and 6. Admission is free. The fair is open from 11am to 7pm at Halls 1 to 5 of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
