New Bill To Prevent Developers, Homebuyers From Suing One Another, Zuraida

Aimed at mitigating the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, the Temporary Measures Bill is set to be tabled in the middle of July in the Dewan Rakyat, said Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the delay of many housing projects as the measures rolled out by the government to contain the spread of the virus stopped construction works at such projects.

Zuraida noted that the delay cannot be blamed on any party.

“When we draft the bill, there will be a clause where both parties (developers and buyers) cannot sue one another. We will be making new terms,” she was quoted by Bernama as saying after a visit to the Kamunting Fire and Rescue Station.

She revealed that the ministry has received 700 to 800 applications from developers for the extension of completion periods of their projects.

“Buyers must also accept the fact that they cannot make any claim based on the original agreement,” said Zuraida.
