Chow: New Penang Covid-19 cases stresses importance of contact tracing

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stressed on the importance of contact tracing in relation to the three positive Covid-19 cases reported in the state today.

He said more than 100 people who came in contact with the three positive cases had been contacted and tested for the virus, with the majority of them testing negative.

“We are still waiting for a few more results.

“What is important is contact tracing so that testing and isolation can be done. If necessary, those affected should be treated immediately,” he said.

Penang reported three positive Covid-19 cases today, two of which were from the Kedah Sivagangga Persons Under Investigations (PUI) Cluster and under the new Kurau Cluster in Perak.

Malaysia today recorded 13 new Covid-19 cases, raising the tally of infections in the country to 9,083.

The first case of the Kurau cluster (Case-9050) was reported on Aug 7, while the second case (Case-9082) is a brother-in-law to the first case, who was traced, thanks to active case detection and close contact screening.

Following that, the whole family in Penang was also screened. On Aug 9, the patient tested positive, while five other family members tested negative.

On Friday, Penang recorded one positive Covid-19 case, ending the state’s three-month ‘green’ status.

Today’s new cases have also raised the tally of infections in the state to 125.
