KUANTAN (Bernama): A 60-year-old woman paid a heavy price for befriending and trusting an acquaintance on Facebook when she was cheated of RM34,101 last month.

According to Pahang Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Mohd Wazir Mohd Yusof, the victim said she wanted to help a man known as Ying Jimmy, who claimed to be an American, to start a business here.

“The suspect, who befriended the victim in July, said he had sent a parcel containing US$1mil (RM4.14mil) to her, which was expected to arrive on Aug 15,” he told reporters here on Tuesday (Sept 4).

A few days later, the victim received calls, demanding that she settle a few payments, including for insurance, to the tune of RM34,101. She complied with the demands and paid up.

Mohd Wazir said the victim lodged a police report on Monday (Sept 3) after realising she had been cheated. – Bernama
