Drivers to get traffic updates from Google Maps with Commute function

The time of checking local radio stations for possible traffic delays may soon be over. Google Maps wants to alert you to possible traffic jams before you leave the house.

Google has added special features for commuters to its Maps app, so that drivers and other commuters can check for traffic jams or other delays before they set off.

Drivers, cyclists and public transit users will now get early warnings about possible disruptions on their commute to and from work.

Google says its goal is to help commuters avoid traffic problems completely using live traffic data it receives about potential delays.

For car drivers, there’s now an integration of music streaming services from Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play Music, designed especially for motorists who put their smartphone in a holder.

Now, these services can be controlled directly in Maps to save the drivers from having to switch between applications, and thus distracting them from the road.

Since the new functions are gradually being rolled out worldwide, it may take some time before the new “Commute” tab appears on each device. – dpa
