Ministry studying plans to amend Strata Management Act

KUALA LUMPUR: The Housing and Local Government Ministry is studying proposals to amend the Strata Management Act 2013 (SMA 2013) but there is no definite time line when something conclusive can be announced.

Its deputy minister Senator Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrain Shah said the ministry is aware there are many issues, inconsistencies and conflicts uncovered since the implementation of SMA 2013, which was enforced June 1, 2015.

“…the Act is in dire need for amendments. Several meetings with groups like you have been held to discuss the necessary amendments under the previous regime.

“My ministry is now studying these proposals, and will certainly be submitting our findings to the Attorney General’s office for amendments to the Act,” Raja Kamarul said in his opening speech at the “Bridging property management and facilities management”.

The seminar was organised by Malaysian Institute of Property and Facility Managers (MIPFM) on Thursday.

At the same event, the president of Transparency International Malaysia Datuk Akhbar Satar said the risks of fraud and corruption is high in property management due to the variety of goods and services needed to drive property and strata msnagement.

He said misappropriation of funds by property managers is an issue and those living in strata developments and paying monthly management and services fees must know how the money is being used.
