Woman conned by ‘pregnant injured mother’ at KLCC

PETALING JAYA: A Facebook user has alleged that she was scammed by a pregnant woman at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre on Friday (Oct 19).

Lee Wen Lin, in her Facebook post, said she was approached at a lift in Suria KLCC by the woman who claimed that she was robbed in a car park and that she was bleeding internally and in pain.

“I lent her my phone so that she could call her husband and also 999.

“She called, with hands shaking and tears rolling. She said her husband is not picking up,” she wrote, adding that the lady told her 999 said she needed to go to hospital in a private car.

Lee also said that the woman claimed no one, not even the security guards, helped her.

“I volunteered to help her call a Grab to a nearby hospital. She said she needs to go to Subang Jaya Medical Centre because that is her regular hospital,” Lee said, adding that the woman insisted on cash payment for the GrabTaxi, on the pretext that she did not want to stain the car with the blood from her clothes.

Lee said that before the woman boarded the taxi, she gave her RM120 out of goodwill to cover the cab fare and hospital registration.

“Within five minutes after the taxi left, the journey ended. The taxi cost was just RM1, after looking at the Grab receipt that I (received).

“Looking back at my call logs, I realised 999 never actually answered her call. She was actually pretending to talk over the phone,” she wrote.

Lee claimed that this might be a new modus operandi that is used by scammers to con people.

“Beware of pregnant lady asking for money. I should have brought her to the security office or asked for help from the nearby crowd or called 999 myself,” she added.

Lee also noted that she has reported the incident to Grab.

The post has received over 1,000 Likes and shared over 1,000 times. Many were angered by the incident and advised Lee to report this to the authorities.

Himanshu Dhir wrote that because of “scammers like these”, people are “forced to doubt the people who are genuinely in trouble”.

There were those who commended Lee on her good deed, despite being conned.

“You have done a good job, even though you were being cheated. God knows your kindness and will repay you (sic),” wrote Jenny Lau.

Loong Tien Hun encouraged Lee not to stop helping others because of one bad incident.

“It’s her loss to abuse your kindness,” he wrote.
