Largest solar park in Malaysia starts operation
October 31 (Renewables Now) – Malaysian utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KLSE:TENAGA), or TNB, has started supplying power to the national grid from a 50-MW Large Scale Solar (LSS) park in Selangor state, the company announced Tuesday.
Located in Kuala Langat district, the solar plant last week achieved its initial operation date (IOD), while it is expected to reach full capacity before the end of the year.
The largest PV plant in the country uses 230,000 solar panels installed on 98 hectares (242.2 acres). TNB’s subsidiary, TNB Sepang Solar Sdn Bhd has developed the project, while TNB Engineering Corporation Sdn Bhd was entrusted with the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).
Malaysia’s Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry has set a 20% renewable power target for 2030, the current figure being 2%. At present, around 53% of Peninsular Malaysia’s power generation comes from coal, 42% from natural gas and 5% from hydro and other types of renewable energy,Tenaga Nasional said.
