Facebook Messenger testing dark mode in selected regions

Facebook is reportedly ready to introduce a dark mode to its Messenger app, making it the latest social media platform to follow the trend after Twitter and Reddit announced their versions earlier.

However, as CNet.com shares, last week Facebook finally acknowledged testing the dark mode feature in “a handful of markets” but the tech giant would not elaborate further about the makeover.

Even Microsoft, Google Chrome and WhatsApp are looking to introduce dark colour scheme options this year, as the mode has become increasingly popular among users.

According to TechRepublic, dark mode changes the standard background of many apps and services to a darker colour like grey or black, thus reducing effects such as eye strain that is associated with white backgrounds. In some cases, it also improves battery life.

So far, it is not clear when Facebook will officially announce the dark mode feature in Messenger, although Wong states that one could check to see if they’ve received the update in the “Me” section of the app.
