Fast-track to a global career in accounting and finance

FOR school leavers, it can be tough not knowing which university to choose and what course to enrol in. In Malaysia alone, there are many public and private universities, with hundreds of courses available. But how sure are you the path you chose is the right one for you?

University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) located in the state of Johor is the best of both worlds as it offers a high-quality UK education at a more affordable cost than going to the United Kingdom. UoRM’s foundation programme also provides a pathway to either the Malaysia or UK campus, allowing you the flexibility and comfort of your wallet. With a ranking in the top 200 universities in the world according to QS World University Rankings 2019, UoRM offers a wide range of courses in both foundation and undergraduate programmes.

One of the most prominent courses available is accounting and finance, whereby students once graduated will have rewarding careers as qualified accounting and finance professionals are highly sought after. Working across multiple industry sectors such as business, finance, government, education and healthcare, a career in accounting and finance could potentially open up opportunities to world-leading financial hubs like Singapore, London and New York that only few other professions could.

Recently, the UoRM’s triple-accredited Henley Business School partnered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) – one of the industry’s most respected professional bodies – in a collaboration called the Henley-ICAEW Programme (HIP).

As an integrated, career-focused programme, HIP has three features that set it apart from other accounting and finance programmes available anywhere.

Firstly, HIP allows students to graduate with three qualifications rather than just one. Not only will students get a prestigious Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Accounting and Finance from the Henley Business School, they will also receive the ICAEW Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) and the Business and Finance Professional (BFP) designation. Graduates will then be able to use the letters ‘BFP’ after their name as an international recognition of their technical competency, ethical awareness and commitment to their professional development.

Besides, HIP also provides students with a full 12-month work placement in Year Three, where they will gain valuable work experience and placed in one of the prestigious “big” accounting firms in Malaysia, major banks and other reputable firms which are ICAEW Authorised Training Employers (ATE). In some cases, students are often given job offers by the companies where they are placed even before graduating.

Moreover, students can also fast-track to get a chartered accountant status with ICAEW, famously known as ICAEW ACA. HIP students are also exempted from a maximum of eight papers as well as a waiver of about 850 Sterling pounds in exemption and registration fees. Upon completion of the 12-month work placement, it is also claimable as credit for Prior Work Experience.

As a result, HIP graduates are work-ready, highly employable and stand out in a crowd of graduates.

Apart from the prestige of a UK degree from the Henley Business School, University of Reading, ICAEW also has reciprocal memberships with professional bodies in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada. An ICAEW ACA can consequently practise accountancy in these countries without necessarily taking examinations with them. Therefore, HIP really is a great option for a global career.

If you are a recent school leaver, UoRM’s International Foundation Programme (IFP) is available for enrolment and upon completion of the Foundation in Business, it will give you direct access to progress to HIP. Intakes for IFP are in April and September. Alternatively, you may also apply for a direct entry to the HIP programme with A-levels or other suitable qualifications.

Head on over to the campus Open Days on March 16 and 23. Intakes for UoRM Foundation Programme are in April and September, while Undergraduate Programme intakes are in September and January.
