Save space on your phone and delete those family videos on WhatsApp

A few shared photos here, a video or two there: WhatsApp conversations can reach a stately size, especially if you’re in a few group chats with friends and family members that like to share pictures and films.

If you’re running out of space on your smartphone, cleaning up your WhatsApp media folder is a good place to start.

To find out which chats are the biggest memory guzzlers, go to “Settings/Data and memory usage” in the menu. There, WhatsApp will list all your chats, sorted by size.

Once you’ve decided which conversations you want to back up from your phone, you can open each of these chats one after the other and select “More/Export Chat” from the menu.

WhatsApp lets you choose if you want to attach all the media or just export the text messages. You can also send this backup by email. Once backed up, you can then delete a chat’s history by going into the chat and selecting “More/Clear Chat” from the menu. – dpa
