Twitter removes feature for precise location tagging

Perhaps a sign there are limits to how much people share on Twitter, the microblogging service is removing the ability to tag a precise location in tweets, due to lack of use.

“Most people don’t tag their precise location in tweets, so we’re removing this ability to simplify your tweeting experience. You’ll still be able to tag your precise location in Tweets through our updated camera. It’s helpful when sharing on-the-ground moments,” it said, on its Twitter Support account.

The exact location refers to tagging latitude and longitude data, though users can still tag landmark locations like an office building or a park.

According to its FAQ, the feature which enables sharing of the user’s precise location is off by default and the user has to opt in to use it. Users can also opt back out in the Privacy and Safety menu.

“Be cautious and careful about the amount of information you share online. There may be some updates where you want to share your location and some updates where you want to keep your location private. Just like you might not want to tweet your home address, please be cautious when tweeting from locations that you don’t want others to see,” Twitter added.
