Avisena Group eyeing expansion with 3 more specialist hospitals

SHAH ALAM: As demand for better healthcare, and by extension health tourism, is on the rise in the country, the Avisena Hospital Group plans to build three more specialist hospitals.

The Avisena Group currently has two hospitals and a dialysis centre operating and the upcoming hospitals would pave the way for the group to be public listed.

Avisena group president and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Omar Abd Hamid said they were looking at achieving these within the next three years.

Speaking after the official opening of the Avisena Women and Children’s Specialist Hospital, here, today, he said there was a demand for such hospitals and the next hospital would most likely be a 250 bedded hospital in Taman Melawati.

The Women and Children’s Specialist Hospital was officially opened by Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. He was accompanied by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.

Dr Omar said they would be tapping into the health tourism industry, attracting tourists primarily from Australia, Indonesia and the Middle East.

They are also working on plans for the Marriot Hotel to be built next to their hospital here.

Dr Omar said the new 133 bed hospital here had seen an overwhelming response from the public since it started operations last May.

Designed with women and children in mind, the hospital has created a special room for mothers of their paediatric patients called the Anjung Bonda.

It is an exclusive room for mothers to rest and recuperate.

In conjunction with the opening today, the hospital has fully sponsored the cost of two operations amounting to RM25,000.

It involves a five-year old boy for a laparoscopic procedure and a 10-month old baby for a cleft palate procedure.

Avisena currently owns a 118 bed specialist hospital about 200 metres from the new hospital.
