JB has most dengue cases in the state

JOHOR BARU: A staggering 80 per cent of dengue cases in Johor were recorded in the state capital, said state Health and Environment executive councillor R. Vidyananthan.

He said the main reason behind this was the lack of attention paid to cleaning up homes and poor maintenance of surroundings.

“Up to Saturday, there were 4,330 dengue cases and 18 dengue related deaths here.

Johor Baru is now the largest contributor to dengue cases in the state.

“There are 86 locations which are still reporting active dengue cases.

“Of this, 40 are under the Johor Baru City Council, 21 under the Iskandar Puteri City Council and 25 under the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council.

“In contrast, the locality of Flat Tasek 64 Bandar Sri Alam, which had previously reported repeated cases of dengue fever over the last four years, has reported only four cases this year,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Vidyananthan said the Leaders Dengue Walkabout Programme was designed to tackle the dengue situation in the district.

This, he said, was also in line with the state government’s commitment to successfully implement the anti-dengue campaign throughout the state.

“I will be participating in the Leaders Dengue Walkabout Programme at Flat Tasek 64 Bandar Sri Alam, Pasir Gudang tomorrow (today).”

He said although dengue management efforts were carried out by the Johor government each time cases were reported, such cases proved to be difficult to eradicate.

“The public should not take dengue cases lightly as it could prove to be fatal.

“Just like how the people are adapting to the new normal with the Covid-19 pandemic, the same should be done with dengue, especially in terms of changing our behaviour and attitude.”
