Proton sales rise 20pct to 11,392 units in October

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd’s sales grew 20 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 11,392 units in October.

With the current market share of 21.3 per cent, the national carmaker said its sales for the 10 months of 2020 stood at 84,999 units, 6.2 per cent more than 2019’s total sales.

Proton said its three models – the Persona, X70 and Exora – continued to lead in their respective market segments, although sales in October were slightly lower than in September.

The Persona continues to lead the B-segment sedan market with 2,360 units sold, the X70 saw 2,216 units sold while the Exora retained its customary position as the best-selling C-segment multi-purpose vehicle with 580 units sold.

Proton sold 712 units of the Iriz and 2,216 units for the X70 in October.

Proton Edar chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah said the recovery of Malaysia’s automotive market had continued to gather pace judging by the number of new model launches and total sales in October.

“We estimate the total industry volume (TIV) to be the second highest in 2020 with over 57,000 units sold, proof that the car industry is rebounding strongly,” he said in a statement today.

Roslan said there was a significant drop in Sabah and Sarawak sales while the central region was static compared to September.

“Part of this was due to the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) to limit the movement of people and thus affecting retailers but there was also a sense of customers holding back before the launch of our newest model, the Proton X50.

“Regardless, Proton is confident of ending the year well and using the results as a base to aim even higher in 2021,” he said.

Proton said it had received 27,400 bookings for the X50 as at end-October, while 447 units had been delivered to customers.

“We are pushing to ensure fulfilment over the last three months of 2020, while continuing to emphasise on product quality,” added Roslan.
