Free daily 1GB data to be extended until July 31 – MCMC

KUALA LUMPUR: To help the people cope with the digital transformation in the new normal, the free daily 1GB Internet data provided to customers will be extended until July 31.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) informed that the decision was agreed upon by the five major telecommunications service providers, namely Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U-Mobile and Telekom Malaysia (TM).

“This latest extension is given as an additional support to the people, courtesy of the telecommunication companies as the Covid-19 situation in the country is still not stable.

“This is also to help schoolchildren who will be switching back to home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) after Aidilfitri as announced by the Ministry of Education recently,“ MCMC said in a statement here, today.

The free 1GB daily quota is in addition to other existing data plans and can be used for video conferencing as well as manage teaching materials via email throughout the day, without any time restriction.

However it cannot be used for social media browsing, video streaming, music streaming and online games.

Meanwhile, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL) has also continued to support the education system by extending the Learn From Home (LFH) initiative until Sept 30 and this would include students from higher learning institutions.

This special package provides a free SIM card with 40GB of data and a free smartphone for students from the B40 family,

“MCMC hopes that with the free 1GB daily data extended until July 31 together with other forms of support, this will to some extent bring some relief to the people as they face the new norms in education, employment and others.

“The government will continue to drive initiatives such as the National Digital Network (Jendela) and the MyDIGITAL Action Plan to ensure that the digitalisation development agenda is implemented and no one will be left behind,“ the statement read. -Bernama
