Mi 9, Xiaomi’s first triple-camera phone, starts from RM1,699

Xiaomi’s flagship Mi 9 – its first smartphone to pack triple main cameras – will be available starting this weekend.

The phone comes in two capacities. The model with 6GB RAM with 64GB storage costs RM1,699 and will be available starting April 6 on Lazada while the one with 6GB RAM with 128GB storage costs RM1,999 and will be available starting April 13 at Mi stores and via Maxis plans.

There is a pre-order for the Mi 9 128GB which starts April 6 and offers the first 1,000 customers a 20-watt Mi Wireless charging pad and 27-watt power adaptor worth RM129.

The Mi 9 will be available in Piano Black and Ocean Blue, while the Lavender Violet colour will be introduced later.

Malaysia and Singapore country manager Allen An says the flagship smartphone market in Malaysia has become more competitive in terms of pricing, exceeding the RM3,000 price point.

“Fans deserve to experience flagship smartphones at an honest price,” he says in a statement.
The triple-camera array consists of a main unit with a 48-megapixel sensor, a 16-megapixel sensor with ultra-wide angle lens, and a 12-megapixel sensor with telephoto lens.

The Mi 9 has a 6.39in display with a dewdrop notch at the top to house the 20-megapixel front-facing camera and an in-screen fingerprint sensor at the bottom.

It uses a USB C port for charging and data transfer, and doesn’t have a 3.5mm audio jack.

Xiaomi claims it is the first to introduce 20-watt wireless charging, which is certified by engineers in TÜV Rheinland as safe. It claims it only takes 90 minutes to wirelessly charge the phone’s 3300mAh battery to full.

Wired charging with the 27-watt adapter, on the other hand, takes about 30 minutes to hit 70% charge.

Sadly, the unit only comes bundled with an 18-watt charger, while the other chargers are sold separately.
